“Don’t you know that all of us who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (Romans 6:3-4)
It was a delight to conduct Vanessa’s baptism on Easter Sunday. Not only because we had the privilege of witnessing her declaration of faith and commitment to livelong discipleship but because the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection at Easter was also remembered in the act of baptism. We share in the Good Friday cross of Christ – entering water, symbolically dying to an old way of life without Christ, confessing our sinfulness and remembering that Jesus died so that we can be forgiven. We also share in the resurrection of Christ – rising out of the water, symbolically rising to a new life with Christ, death defeated and with the promise of everlasting life. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life” (John 10:10b) and “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25a) So may we all place our trust and faith in Jesus Christ, for in Him we will know abundant and everlasting new life.
