Tom Fisk – The Father’s Heart is Holy – John 8:1-11

“Jesus declared, ‘Go now and leave your life of sin.’” (John 8:11b NIVUK)

Just as his teaching to tax collectors and sinners in Luke 15 conveyed the Heavenly Father’s love for His lost children, so Jesus conveys the same heart in His defence of the adulterous women in John 8. His defence is for the sinner, and not the sin, whom He forgives and welcomes but with the instruction to “go and sin no more” (NKJV). We thank God for His wonderful gift of salvation in Christ, the death and resurrection of Jesus, which brings forgiveness for sin and the hope of everlasting life. But to go on sinning in response to this sacrifice is to dishonour what Christ has done for us on the cross. Paul writes, “Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? By no means!” (Romans 6:1-2) We must rather die to sin and live a new life exampled by Christ, be holy as he is holy (1 Peter 1:6).
