Revd Andrew Fitzgerald -The Fathers Heart – Luke 15

“While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms round him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20 NIVUK)

This Sunday we began a new sermon series exploring the Father’s Heart. We turned to the parable of the lost son which artist Charlie Mackesy has alternatively entitled the Running Father with a beautiful sculpture replicated in various paintings. This story concerns a wasteful younger son, who squanders his inheritance. He left for a distant country, disgraced himself and lost everything. What reception would he find on his return to the father? A forgiving and compassionate embrace. His identity and status restored by a father who waited and ran to meet his lost son with abundant grace. Perhaps you have wandered away from the Heavenly Father? Perhaps you have squandered the generosity that He has poured out on you? Return home, for He is waiting to meet you with open arms.
