“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Out of His fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.”
(John 1:14,16—NIV)
Writing several decades after the life of Christ, John is concerned to ensure Christians understand who Jesus really was and is, lest we have too low a view of Him. John 1:14-18 introduces the idea of Jesus being the ‘fullness’ of God. Fully God (the eternal Word) and fully man (flesh and blood, like us in every way). Fully here (making his dwelling place among us) and fully now (reminding us of the OT ‘Tent of Meeting’ Jesus perfectly reveals the present glory of God). Fully old (fulfilling the OT sacrificial and legal code) and fully new (establishing a new covenant of grace and truth).
