Rev Andrew Fitzgerald – The Jesus Way – Matthew 10:1-10

“Jesus called His twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and illness.” (Matthew 10:1)

In Matthew 10:1-10 we read about the early disciples being sent for mission. First, Jesus gives authority to serve – they have no qualification other than the authority given by the One who has all the fullness of God dwell in Him (Colossians 1). Second, Jesus sends the disciples with instruction, to reach the lost sheep of Israel – those closest to them, not the Gentiles or the Samaritans. And third, Jesus sends them with a message to preach – the nearness of God’s kingdom that not only loves but heals, cleanses and drives out. As we follow Jesus we too are sent to serve in mission (Matthew 28:16-20). It is Jesus who gives the authority for us to serve, not our own qualification. It is Jesus that instructs we serve those on our front lines – the lost sheep of our church, family members, friends, neighbours and work colleagues. It is Jesus who gives a message to proclaim – the life transforming and changing presence of God, available to those who believe and trust in Him. What is God saying to you through this passage?
